The bartender gave me a nod of approval, and about 15 minutes later, a white plate slid in front of me. I immediately realized that I wasn’t even in the mood for a burger.

A small voice inside of me piped up and asked: Do you like this restaurant because you like this restaurant? Or because someone online told you that you should like this restaurant?

While spending the summer in NYC, I’ve been collecting recommendations. Every scroll on social media introduces a new list. “Where the cool girls are going in West Village,” “The best pizza slices in the city,” “Most impressive reservation and how to get it”

I bookmark each in bed, trying to save everything on Google Maps, exhausted by the options. A weird feeling of confusion and FOMO has been creeping in.

At each mealtime, I reference this tyrannical list. I instantly forget where I got each recommendation. I feel a pang of shame for not planning ahead and for not being organized enough to make a reservation two weeks in advance. I’m afraid of making the wrong choice. I don’t want to go somewhere stupid.

Instead of pursuing my own curiosity, I ask, “Where are people going online?” “Did someone say this was good?”

I am not following my own instinct. I want someone else to tell me what is cool. I find myself on each street corner, paralyzed by invisible opinions.

I snapped a photo of the burger for my Instagram story. An invisible box feels like it’s checked off. I wonder what game I’m playing.

I want to do NYC right. And it seems that everyone else wants to, too. A subtle “keeping up with the Joneses” is happening on city streets in the form of really long lines and froyo photos.

But I can’t pretend to care about a viral pastry or pizza slice anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a restaurant rec, and I have proudly waited in each of those long ice cream lines. But over the past few years, I’ve learned that the single most important thing I can do is learn how to access my own voice and speak it out loud. Even if I only whisper it to myself.

Trying to find somewhere to eat is a very small example. But in it, I see my ability to listen to my own preferences weakening. Everything is “chic.” Or is it? In the face of so many opinions, how do you know what you like?

Do I like this because I like it? Or because someone told me I should like it?

I don’t want to outsource my taste to the internet.

Growing up is a challenge in becoming yourself. A winding path of learning, a slow shedding, an experiment in what fits you well and what does not. You have to try things on to find out. And over time, you learn what you like. But on the other hand, there are things that are true to you that likely harken back to the very beginning.

(I love how my friend puts this. “An echo chamber of style recommendations. People projecting taste.” Great language in this article.)

The coolest people I know collect stuff. Compliments, memories, experiences, clothing items, art, relationships. They are full of checkered insights picked up along the way.

These are a few of mine:

I love a cappuccino with regular milk. Hot in the morning, iced in the afternoon – mostly because it reminds me of time spent in Paris.

I love finding an interesting jacket or a pair of shoes; this opinion was shaped by my mother. I like the Belleek ring holder on my nightstand, which my grandmother gave me. I look for Majolica because of my family’s dense collection.

I like drinking a can of LaCroix because it was stocked in the garage fridge of my childhood home. I collect religious art because of its spiritual significance. Italian stationery because of my semester spent in Milan, Italy, and the way it always spilled out of a letter desk in our living room.

I like a long walk and a healthy meal made at home because of how I’ve come to know myself living alone. I need a journal situated on the couch in a quiet house to find my thoughts.

No overhead lights, walls full of art, no family photos, and navy blue instead of black because of my Dad. Olives because of how they sat on the counter at family gatherings. Swedish Fish because they were always in my grandma’s purse. Papa John’s pizza because of college.

This question only becomes more and more important: What do you like?

There is a unique answer that cannot be found in a list online.

BACK TO SCHOOL-ISH: I stepped into a bookstore on the way home from happy hour last night. I stood wide-eyed in front of an epic display of pens all lined up in little jars. Every color and point you could imagine! It transported me to what it felt like to shop for school supplies in grade school. As a kid, I truly counted down the days, making a list of need-to-have notebooks. I have long been obsessed with new paper products, but there is a deep sense of nostalgia attached to them—a fresh start and the hope of transition.

I have one week left in NYC, and I feel like a kid who has had too much summering. A child in need of some structure. I am thinking about what it will be like to re-enter my familiar routine in Charleston. In some ways, I completely forget what it is like. Over the past two months, I have been exposed to so much newness and stimulation that it’s like my brain has just wiped out my old life. Similar to a kid who only has a hazy memory of what it’s like to go to school – all of it faded in the rearview of ice cream cones, pool days, and sleeping in.

To my surprise, this morning I started booking early workout classes at my favorite Charleston studios with eager anticipation. It’s time to get back to it!!! Please, put me back in my desk chair. Looking at the calendar, August ticking right on by, I thought, “But what is left on my summer list?” A bucket list stresses me out. I can’t usually predict what I’ll have time for, and I am not a rule follower. So today I am asking, “What do I want the rest of summer to feel like? What do I actually want?”

I want a clean house. An organized fridge. Long catch-up conversations with friends. I want to take a walk on the beach and make a meal from scratch. I want to arrive early at my office and type at my desk. I want an early bedtime with a book I like to read. I want after-work sunset walks and a thinned-out closet—only home to stuff I actually want to wear.

These could all be symptoms of lots of time spent in New York City.

But I also want new pens.

SO INSPIRED: I can’t get over Alex Mill’s marketing lately. An expert mix of glossy, art-directed shots, behind-the-scenes, product photography, humor, and elegance. Scrolling through their Instagram is a masterclass in modern marketing. And the styling… chills?! Their hero tote seems like a workhorse. Still on my wishlist. Perhaps a back-to-the-school-of-me purchase …

It was 7 pm. I had nothing to do. I’ve traversed what feels like the majority of my New York City neighborhood blocks, so with the open evening, I headed somewhere still unknown to me. The sun was sinking behind skyscrapers, the air settling into a perfect 75 degrees.

I remembered that I needed mascara, so I walked into a Sephora.

I didn’t have the energy to debate my options and just grabbed the tube suggested to me. One earbud in, I approached the checkout counter.

The woman looked up at me, scanning the box and nodding to the screen in front of me.

“Would you like to enter your phone number for points?”

I punched in my cell on the credit card terminal.

“Have you shopped with us before? It doesn’t look like you have an account.”

A sudden dread washed over me. I wanted to roll my eyes. I’ve created a web of complicated credentials that I do not want to keep track of. An administrative nightmare.

“Could it be under a different number?” she asked.

A sharp feeling shot down the middle of my chest. My heart rate quickened because really, I already knew my number wouldn’t work. With each digit, a thought rose higher in the back of my mind: I usually use my mom’s phone number at Sephora.

My mom died a year and a half ago.

On my first foray into makeup, she took me here. I was probably in the 8th grade – finally allowed to wear mascara. At age 14, she suggested I just give them her name. She already had an account. It’s always been this way.

These memories flashed before me, grief involuntarily striking me down at a random Sephora in Chelsea.

“I’ll try a different number,” I said, my hand hovering over the same keypad.

Swallowing a sinking feeling in my stomach, I reached into the back of my memory, dusting off a number that no longer connects. On the sixth digit, I started to panic.

What if I don’t remember my dead mom’s phone number?!

It felt like a test of my own keeping in touch.

“2-9-2-4,” I muttered under my breath, finishing what felt like a herculean task.

“Elaine?” she smiled.

I nodded. I hadn’t heard my mom’s name said so confidently in a long time. The sound bounced off the counter, holding none of the weight of what happened. It echoed like she was alive.

I looked down, absorbing the sound, shielding myself from further connection.

As if in slow motion, the sales rep leaned over the counter and said, “I thought your name was going to be something else, but now that you say it, this one really fits you. Beautiful.”

My jaw dropped. What inspired her to make a random comment like this? What do I do with it? I rushed to the door, pushing into a sidewalk buzzing with bodies.

The world rarely makes room for your loss, but eventually, you’ll realize that the form of your days has grown around it. That you’ve gotten used to the gaping hole. That you don’t call your mom’s phone anymore.

Recently someone reflected back to me, “It will never not be shocking.”

It’s true. But time keeps passing. And I keep finding leftover love stored in different accounts.

Even in the form of beauty discounts.

Second, this audiobook by Suleika Jaouad. Listened while browsing the MET — but it is very good anywhere. Real tangible prompts for writing and insight on the practice of keeping a journal.

DRESS BRAND WITH GOOD STUFF UNDER $500: I happened upon this brand in SoHo recently. I love the structured style and quality feel. I was relieved to see that most price tags were under $500. Why is every good dress over $1000 lately?!

The often-advertised goal (to love everything about your life) is impossible. We are human! Life is hard. I’ve been writing these monthly guides with accessible exercises to help us like our lives even amid the normal human hardships we all experience. Catch up on the previous guides here!

You name it, I have tried it.

I have gotten back together with an ex. I have downloaded and redownloaded Hinge, actively stoking the flames of my love-hate relationship with modern dating.

I’ve randomly tried Bumble. Made eye contact with a man in a bar and ended up kissing him on the street in the rain. Purchased plane tickets to other cities — signing myself up for whirlwind weekends with men I didn’t really match with.

Slid into DMs prompted by “matchmaker” Instagram posts. Said yes to FaceTime first dates. Considered cheesy “Christian” dating apps. Texted my friends from bathroom stalls, “I don’t know if I like him, but I’m going to get another drink,” losing clarity of my true feelings with each passing minute.

Made and sent boys playlists (kiss of death), been asked out on church steps. Had panic attacks while screaming “I don’t know if we have any chemistry! Is this how it’s supposed to be?!”

FINDING OUT HOW MUCH I LIKE MY LIFE. I just hit one month in NYC, and as of this week, I am starting to hit a wall. Now this is not all the city’s fault – although it is a demanding place. I am beginning to understand what people mean when they say that it’s a lot of work to live here. It is. But … I also have been completely out of routine and meeting about 3 new people every day. I am very introverted by nature, and my body is starting to scream that I need to be alone and eat vegetables. We all have our limits.

I have never felt very connected to a place. I have always thought of myself as someone who could throw themselves into a city and enjoy the thrill of figuring it out. I don’t resonate with my hometown at all; I feel very little need to ever return to where I went to college. After school, I moved to Charleston without knowing anyone, and everything felt like kismet. I love it there. I kind of figured that this would be the case in any city – if I did it in one place, I could do it in others, right?

I sprang for this NYC summer because I didn’t want to grow up and say “I wish I would have moved to New York City.” It felt like God had handed me the opportunity to find something out for myself. I wondered if I would ever want to leave. But as of this week, the data has started to become clear. I belong in Charleston. This is the first time I’ve felt like I have a true home for myself. I can’t wait to go back! I am thinking about what a gift it is to have the privilege of leaving your regular life so you can realize just how much you like it.

Three more weeks in NYC and I’m strapped in to make the most of it. I also can’t wait to settle back into the life I am so proud that I made. Aubrey wrote more about what it means to like your regular life here.

EVERYTHING IS A SKILL. Lately, I’ve seen a lot of people I’ve admired up close. I was talking to a friend at coffee about how when you see someone with notoriety in person, you realize they are human, and you have so much more in common than you might have thought before. Usually, the difference between you and them is a lot of practice and therefore more skills. Everything requires practice. But this means that everything is learnable. I’ve been repeating this to myself. If you’re willing to try, you can improve. And if you’re willing to grow, anything is really possible.

YOU GOT THIS (FARE REQUIRED): New York City can throw you into an existential feeling – how are there this many people in the world? They all have text chains, closets of things, concerns, lovers, friends, things to plan …. It’s endless. How does God keep track of it all? It’s beyond me.

I stood on the corner of Broadway and Houston last night. The exhaust of a halal cart and the buzzing of commuters circled around me. I was running a post-work errand, and it was beginning to rain. I paused at the edge of the sidewalk, reminding myself to look around.

I’ve learned that all things – inspiration, connection, creativity – begin with noticing, so I try to consciously remind myself to pay good attention. As Mary Oliver says, “this is our endless and proper work.”

Snapping myself into the moment, I looked up and saw “You Got This” printed on the side of the Adidas building. “That’s nice,” I thought – albeit a bit basic. I snapped a photo, and when I looked back at my camera roll, I noticed the bus perfectly positioned in front, nearly screaming “FARE REQUIRED.” I laughed as I crossed the street, “That’s perfect,” I said out loud.

Each morning I try to recite a list of affirmations – like little prayers of agreement – that have formed from my work with The Artist’s Way. The second from the top reads, “Do not lament the cost of what you want.”

You Got This. Fare Required.

But what is required?

The arduous work of trying again and again and again. The quiet needed to hear your inner, most authentic voice. The courage to follow its lead. The heat of being unsure of yourself. The discouragement that comes from making things repeatedly until you close the gap between your vision and your skill. The bravery needed to be seen. Likely feeling weird in meetings. The endurance to push through embarrassment. The stress of putting yourself out there. Years of being misunderstood by your distant family members, friends from high school, or strangers watching you try. Saying scary nos so you can say unseen yeses. Confrontation with yourself for your lack of consistency. Frustration with the process. Digging until you get to the heart of what you really want. The difficulty in granting yourself space to do what you are called to do.

The cost is in the running, which requires real training. Sore legs, the out-of-breath feeling, spending days out on the pavement. But with enough practice, you can catch any bus you want. You got this — but there is a fare required.

FREE CHAMPAGNE PSA: I walked into Balthazar last night in SoHo after a casual trip to Target. It took a surprising amount of courage to approach the host stand and request a table for one. What was I afraid of? That they might think I’m stupid for trying to get into a famous restaurant alone without a reservation, of course. But truly, who cares. (This was my internal monologue.)

A man with thick black glasses and an intimidating facade that could be felt from miles away took one look at me and said, “Right now?” I said back, “Yes,” like it was a test. I was quickly led to a tiny table in the corner – my wet umbrella and tote bags in tow. When the server came, he glanced at me and said, “We offer a free glass of sparkling wine to those who dine alone. Would you like one?”

Like a reward for bravery.

This is a two-part PSA – first, dine alone at Balthazar for a free drink. Second, say yes to yourself. You are the person who holds your own permission.

PODCAST ADDICTION: I have become completely addicted to this podcast. In a mere two days, I have listened to the David Sedaris, Anne Lamott, Suleika Jaouad, and Ocean Vuong episodes. The language they use!!! The interviews are so high quality. I can’t get enough. So much inspiration.

WOMEN KEEPING ME COMPANY: Some of my best summer company has come in the form of my audiobooks. Listening to memoirs of women who have moved to NYC way before me has been a daily habit that has made this summer even more special. I’ve officially been here for one month, and when I decided to come for the summer without really knowing anyone, I knew I would be throwing myself out of my routine and into a whole new orbit far away from my comfort zone. All the familiar things – my closet, my gym, my bed, even my kitchen – are gone. Enter the new routine of walking everywhere, and I learned early on that familiarity could be found through your headphones. A soundtrack can change the city. Lately I’ve been listening to memoirs of women who have done NYC way before me. I have been comforted by author’s voices reciting hilarious, moving, and inspiring stories from their own adventures. There is something so powerful about listening to another woman read her story while yours is currently unfolding.

#1 We Might Just Make It After All by Elyce Arons

Elyce founded Kate Spade and Frances Valentine with Kate Spade. Her story of moving from the Midwest to starting an iconic label in New York City is so inspiring and charming. I love the way she talks about the scrappy beginnings, her day-to-day in the business, meeting her husband, her inspiration sources, continuing Kate’s legacy, and more.

I have a very clear memory of visiting NYC with my mom in 2016. We were on a very special trip with the DAAP design school. I was a senior in high school, finding my way on a college trip, my mom in tow. At this stage of my life, I was sure that I wanted to study fashion design in college. We sat in the Michael Kors conference room, visited fine jewelry designers in Brooklyn, met with shoe designers, walked through Mood Fabrics, sat with authority from the CFDA, and saw the inside of factories in The Garment District. It was the first time I visited the city, and it felt like a VIP tour of everything I imagined this place to be.

One afternoon we had a private conversation with Stan Herman, who is credited as the “Father of Fashion Week.” We sat on wooden stools in his studio overlooking Bryant Park. My mom was a relentless question asker. Put her in a room or any student-like position, and her hand would go straight up. I, being the random high schooler on this college trip, tried not to be embarrassed by it, but she and Stan developed a special connection, and he gave her a fashion sketch of a woman in a turban. She teared up, explaining that she had just gone through chemotherapy.

Leaving his office, there was a tiny hallway that led to an elevator. Across the corridor was another door. Taped to it was a plain sheet of printer paper that read “Francis Valentine.” Stan explained to my mom and me that across the hall, Kate Spade was starting her new brand. In that moment, my mom and I became serious Francis Valentine fans.

I listened to Elyce’s book in a single day last fall while weeding my garden. I would find myself staring blankly into my yard, frozen with a shovel in hand, transfixed by her words. In January, I saw Elyce speak at The Southern C — a conference for female entrepreneurs in Sea Island, GA.

Afterward, I got up the courage to tell her this story. Through tears, I explained that a piece of printer paper taped to a door that I happened to see at 18 has truly propelled me in my own creative journey. A clear reminder — everything and everyone starts somewhere. It’s an image I have always carried with me.

This book is chock-full of more inspiration for the journey and intimate stories of what it’s like to begin something and keep going. I have been listening again this summer as I live in the city. It’s amazing how art can accompany, and the story of another can help you create your own, often finding you when you need it the most. Elyce is one of my biggest inspirations – so full of light! I love this book.

#2 Dogs, Boys, and Other Things I’ve Cried About by Isabel Klee

Oh my gosh, a must-listen! The writing is fantastic. Recently a #1 NYT bestseller, Isabel captures with such accuracy what it means to be in your 20s. From dating to understanding yourself to discovering your purpose, all wrapped into her experience of fostering dogs in NYC.

A few Sundays ago, I woke up way too late and way too hungover. I had gone on a first date the night before with a guy who seemed to be perfect on paper. In reality, I just asked question after question for about three hours. When I told him I had my own business, there was a long pause. He needed to “digest that,” he said. Eventually, with the help of some liquid courage, I said to him, “Well, do you want to ask any questions? I am drilling you.” He said, “Oh no, I’m having fun! You should keep asking me.”

Oh, the thrills of modern dating.

I rolled out of bed and walked to the bathroom. I threw water on my face and watched last night’s mascara circle into the drain. Looking into the mirror, I suddenly felt the walls closing in on me. I was in New York City, and I didn’t really know anyone. And that was a bad date. And it’s a Sunday morning. And I feel sick. And … and … and.

Thankfully, I knew who could help me. I reached for Isabel’s words, and I walked to the bodega around the corner, ordering a sesame bagel with cream cheese. I sat by the water, listening to her similar experiences, laughing.

This book has provided me with such comfort and comedic relief. When people tell great stories, we realize that we are never alone. Isabel’s story is doing that for me this summer.

NYC BUCKET LIST: On Monday, I walked into a local grocery store. Shamefully, this is the first time I’ve gone to stock my fridge since arriving in New York City. I’ve been living on spritzes, martinis, slices of pizza, bodega sandwiches and a prayer. I’ve been acting like it’s my Freshman Year of college — no parents, new city, so much fun to be had. When I woke up violently hungover on Sunday morning, crawling to my tiny kitchen to find nothing in my fridge, I realized something needed to change.

I grabbed my tote bag and walked the few blocks to a local grocery. I pursued the aisles alongside older women pushing carts and nice men stocking the shelves. I stopped at the deli counter, reading over the premade offerings, when a man behind the counter said, “Are you new here?”

I guess New Yorkers can just tell.

I responded, “Yes! I’m here for the summer!” He wondered because he’s never seen me before. He said I looked good and fresh. He shared his name, asked me what I did for work, told me he was here to help, and told me to come back often.

I walked away with warmth in my chest – a sign of a rare in-person connection.

When my mom was dying, I half expected the lyrics of Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Are Dying” to come to life. Like a syllabus for end of life – riding bulls, jumping out of planes, fulfilling “bucket list items.” I quickly realized that it was the little things under our feet that mattered most.

It’s never the grand experiences that come to mind when you’re told your time is up. You think of the micro, nearly-missable human connection points that live in our day-to-day lives. Your couch, your walk to work, your coffee, shared laughter and text messages – little things like these rise to the top of the priority list.

I keep wondering about my New York bucket list. What do I want to do while I’m here? Walking out of the grocery store, I felt like I crossed one thing off.

Befriend a butcher.

The richest experiences are always in the tiniest of things.

BEST BASIC TEES: In my first week in NYC, I picked up this t-shirt in white and navy at the Leset store down the street from my apartment. I understand all the buzz. I love them! One of those things that is worth the money. If you’re looking for a fitted tee – I love this $12 option. I also wear this striped tee a lot, and it’s currently on sale.

A SMATTERING OF OBSERVATIONS: I’ve noticed a few random things during my time in NYC

1. People are drinking orange juice again. I haven’t really ordered orange juice since I was little at Bob Evans with my grandma. Now I’m seeing chic girls drink it on benches and fresh-squeezed options everywhere. Interesting.

2. The corded headphone craze. When did we all decide that it was cool to have corded headphones? I literally do not see AirPods anymore. They’re being treated like an accessory? Is this a symptom of analog summer?

3. Bandana print continues to reign. I’ve always had a crush on Call It By Your Name since I spotted in Le Bon Marché in 2022. I went to Printempts this weekend to take a look at their selection. I’ve also been wearing these bandana socks. How cool is this jacket!? Similar online here. One on Poshmark here!

4. People are smoking cigs. Are they chic again? Seems like it. Controversial but … just an observation!!!

WHAT IS YOUR EGOT? This is one of my favorite questions to ask my friends. ‘EGOT’ is an acronym used in the entertainment industry – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar (Academy Award), and Tony – the highest awards you can win.

If you were reaching for the highest possible things, what would you want to accomplish in your life? Answers range from going to the MET Gala, to being a bestselling author, to purchasing a home in a dream destination to being married and having children. I think I probably got this from Eli Rallo and have been using it at drinks and dinners lately. Sparks fun conversation and is more fun and approachable than “What are your goals?”

HOW TO GROW ONLINE: Boiling it down to one observation – you can be naturally really hot, or you can tell a good story and build a real connection. But being a good storyteller arguably makes you hotter, so these don’t need to be mutually exclusive …

Yes, you can get PR packages regularly! Yes, you can sign 5-figure brand deals. Yes, this is possible, and the tools are free and at your fingertips. And yes, it is incredibly difficult (and mostly mental) to begin and keep going. Honest tips and insights from going from 10K to 60K followers in a year:

YOUR BEST MARKETING TACTIC IS BEING YOURSELF: But this is the hardest thing to do. The best artists are authentic to themselves, and because the internet is an art form, this applies to creating content as well. We recently published this piece on the Migrate Substack all about aligning with your inner voice so you can keep making great work.

I often think of a conversation I had with Lucie Franc de Ferriere’s husband at her cookbook event in Charleston this spring. Lucie started the iconic bakery From Lucie in the East Village, and her husband owns Sunday to Sunday. He was telling me about the process of creating the cookbook and Lucie’s approach to work in general. I am paraphrasing here but he said something along the lines of – “She has a very strong vision. Even if she doesn’t know exactly what something should be, she knows when it is not right. She says “this isn’t what I want” and when we ask “what do you want?” she doesn’t know, but we work until it clicks.”

This! I think about this conversation all the time. It perfectly sums up the process of creating in partnership with your inner voice. I think the strongest indication of vision is not knowing exactly what you want, but knowing what you don’t want. To be original, you must create something new. To do so is often unimaginable, like a blurry outline in your mind’s eye. During the creative process, your job is to uncover it. It’s hard to know exactly what the end product should be, but you do know when it’s a few degrees off. To make authentic work, you must listen to these cues.

I turn off the lamp on my nightstand and roll over with my phone in hand, a blue glow cast across my face, mindlessly scrolling all the apps I spend my days stalking.

The specific flavor of my algorithm is my number one interest – women doing things. I love any memoir or movie featuring a strong female lead, and my social media feeds follow suit.

One evening in 2015, I went to the movies with my brother. I’m 16; he’s about 12, and we are buddies. I have my license now, so on weekends we get to venture out together. It was a wintry night, and we chose to see The Intern in theaters. I’m not sure how we found ourselves here. (I’m sure I dragged him along.)

I was immediately entranced by Anne Hathaway on screen. The way she waltzed into clothing factories and rode her bike through her office. Everything from the brownstones to the trench coats resonated deeply. At 16, I wondered why I was crying at a rom-com-style chick flick with no real consequence. I was shaking in the cushy seating. I remember running out of the theater, repeating: “This is what I want to do. I want to build and make things.”

I’ve watched this movie countless times since. The easiest way to inspire me is with the example of a woman – real or fictional – making things. In my day-to-day life, I surround myself with the Anne Hathaway archetype. Most of my friends, connections and coworkers are cut from a similar cloth – hardworking, creative and full of vision.

Suddenly, in the midst of my nightly app-checking wind-down routine, I noticed that scrolling past all these successful women was making me angry. My alarm bells started ringing.

Cradling my head at 10 pm, watching morning routines, outfit-of-the-day posts, PR hauls, and wonderfully executed content, I felt the heat of jealousy crawl through my body. “I could do something like that,” I mutter to myself, bookmarking each post, shamelessly collecting a museum of other people’s stuff.

The next morning, I wake up, get dressed, and go to work. As the founder of a marketing agency, I make a living helping other people build their businesses. I sit on the phone for hours, telling each person peering back at me how to grow online with great clarity. Meanwhile, I’m afraid to face down the bear of my own desire. A little voice inside of me wants to be heard. It whispers: “I want to do the same.”

Fear often manifests itself as procrastination. I was afraid of being misunderstood as vain, self-obsessed, or “living for the gram.” I didn’t want to realize the gap between what I wanted to make and what I was skilled enough to do.

On the receiving end, the internet looks casual and easy. It looks so simple to throw together a video, post consistent stories, and speak on camera. But anyone who wants to make content knows how unforgiving this medium is. At first glance, you might think those out there in the Instagram arena are just overly confident, maybe even a bit prideful. In reality, if you want to be quickly humbled, I recommend becoming a content creator.

Last fall, I had a serious conversation with myself, and I realized that if I actually wanted to grow online, I had two choices:

1. I could be insanely hot (not really the path for me)

2. I could learn to tell a good story

Following trends or copying what others do might be a good way to warm up your muscles. But to grow authentically, you must realize this is an art form. I finally started to feel free when I realized that the internet is my artistic medium of choice, and this work requires what art demands – effort, iteration, and the relentless release of the most honest work that you can muster today.

In the past year, I’ve gained over 50,000 followers and quadrupled my following, doubling my income through brand partnerships — not by being hot, but by telling stories and using my voice authentically.

Creativity is an act of faith! Very intertwined with the way we connect to our creator and step out in the darkness anyway. To make things, faith is required.

And faith requires that we relinquish control. I used to think creativity was something I controlled — it came from me, it was my output, so it was mine to manage or muster. But it’s a flow! Something we block or something we let move. Our resistance to our own creativity is a form of self-destruction. We throw up roadblocks to maintain the illusion of control. And that resistance shows up as depression, anger, anxiety, sluggishness, and confusion. (All Julia’s words BTW)

The truth is, we do know, and we know that we know. The affirmation from this chapter, “I know the things I know,” has helped me greatly over the past few years. Sneakily simple, it calls to the core of our intuition. My mom used to stop me mid-sentence on the phone whenever I said: “I don’t know.” She would gently reply, “You do know.” She was right! Usually I say “I don’t know” to cover up a truth trying to break free.

YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO LIKE YOUR LIFE: I landed in NYC last night with an empty stomach. I called an Uber from the airport and watched out the window, surprised that I already recognized my neighborhood and could measure with memory how close I was to “home.” Around 9:30 pm, I dropped off my luggage and pushed myself out of the apartment to check whether the line that usually stretches a few blocks at the pizza place around the corner (L’Industrie) was reasonable. There were only a few people ahead of me, and I was able to order two slices of their very popular pizza almost immediately. I stood waiting, catching up on voice memos and answering text messages, a buzz of people moving around me. They called “Caroline,” sliding slices of greasy perfect pizza across the bar. I sent a photo with a text that read “I’m so back.” I carried the paper plates down the sidewalk, the street black and inky, a light rain making everything slick, while shoving a piece of folded margarita into my face. I tossed my head back, letting the rain fall into my eyes, feeling as if I were being baptized in the spirit of New York City.

There is an uncomfortable ping that often comes with pleasure – “Am I allowed to do this?” Growing up, I always thought I was about to get in trouble and have carefully monitored myself for years. From a Midwestern perspective, I understood being reasonable as honorable. As a Catholic, joy can be way more confusing than ever intended. My biggest fears can be encapsulated in the following phrases: “Who do you think you are?” or “Must be nice to have such an easy life!”

While there is a time and place for order, discipline, and sacrifice, I have learned that the better indicator of being on the right track is your own enjoyment. They say “no pain, no gain,” and I agree: you can have anything you work for, but that work can also be fun and feel like you. This is the lesson I’ve been trying to learn.

Yesterday, I came across this quote that puts this sentiment perfectly into words:

“Even if it’s nothing but an alluring tickle, push the objections aside and move into the feeling of ‘Yes!’ Believe it or not, this sensation — not pain, not self-sacrifice, not stoic numbness — is the surest indicator that you’re on the path that will lead you to the best possible effect you can have on the world.”

Easier said than done! Why can it be most uncomfortable to sit with the good feelings!? But pain does not always mean progress. Being the victim is not a victory. You can trust what you find fun. Joy is a powerful indicator! You are allowed to – even supposed to – like your life while you live it. Maybe go buy a slice of pizza tonight?

POWER IN PLEASURE: In the same vein, I recently shared this poem on my Instagram Stories. I find that true delight always springs from very small things – rarely requiring a grand change. An ice cream cone. A walk through the park. Time to sketch on the sidewalk. Wearing the clothing that you already own.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN RECS: My family has been spending summers in Glen Arbor, Michigan, since I was born. Just got back from a trip up north. Sharing my recs here in case you’re planning a trip!

FASHION FORWARD WALKING SHOES: Upping my step game in the city, I have been asked what shoes I like to wear for walking days. These sandals are my new favorite. I wore these flats right out of the box and clocked 20K steps with no sign of blisters. I bought these dad sandals a few years ago and have gotten endless wear out of them! Do you wear a size 8? We ordered the donuts, and believe it or not, this is what got me my summer apartment in NYC.

I have lived in Charleston for five years and have created a very rooted life that I love. A house I renovated, a dream office, a team of employees, and a vibrant community. I have not spent much time in the city, but over this spring weekend in 2025, a forgotten dream came rushing back to me. I wanted to live in New York City.

I peered out the restaurant window and watched handsome men in perfectly fitted tees carrying coffees. It was a Sunday morning.

What was this magical neighborhood? I’d heard buzz about it on Instagram, but I, like anyone else in their right mind, thought, “Well, I could live here.” The same refrain spills out of my mouth every time I find myself in an astronomically expensive neighborhood. The curse of taste, perhaps?

I was not doing well. I did not sleep all weekend. We got into a Carolyn Bessette/JFK-style fight (minus the movie star chemistry) in Central Park the afternoon before. The future seemed, at best, bleak.

ANONYMITY HOBBY: I’ve always been this way — I felt like the world was becoming what it was supposed to be when I stepped off a plane in Milan, Italy, and no one knew who I was. I was 19 and studying abroad for the semester. No one needed a thing from me — I was free to be me. I feel the same way as I pull up random bar seats and walk down the street here in NYC. When I look back, the biggest growth phases of my life are marked by times when I threw myself into places of unknowing. The first week I moved to Charleston, I knew no one and was living in a 400-square-foot carriage house (shed), and I felt like God had carved out a space for me to breathe. I find great comfort and relief in anonymity. Last year, I spent a week running around Nice, France, by myself. It helped sharpen my ability to hear myself. There was no one to consult but my inner voice. When you’re in a completely new space, most of your daily roles evaporate, and your sense of self is stripped down to your authentic self. I think this is why, when traveling or flying 30,000 feet up in an airplane, you can start to hear yourself think. Your desires become clear. Because there is no one around you who expects anything, you have no choice but to be you. Next time someone asks me about my hobbies, I’m adding “being anonymous in a new city.”

A WORKSPACE HUNT: When I left Charleston for the summer, I also left my office, where I would sit for 8 hours straight on the phone, behind. You can’t do hours of phone calls from a cafe — that’s called overstaying your welcome. This has sent me on a hunt for the perfect place to work in the city. WeWork is very convenient and has many locations. Easily book a day pass, and they have cold brew on tap. The locations I have gone to are tech bro havens, which makes for very interesting eavesdropping. Do not be intimidated. Also, the staff is so nice and helpful. Yesterday I tried The Malin in West Village. Okay dreamy! Much more my speed. Do you remember the days of The Wing? I used to idolize the design and branding of that place. It’s giving that. Right now, I’m writing this from The Lily Pond. A perfect cafe with good lunch options and wifi. Bookmark in case you find yourself in the West Village and need a laptop-friendly local.

MEN ARE MOSTLY NICE: Growing up, I wouldn’t describe myself as “boy crazy.” My life is mostly immersed in a girl's world (still is). I had a serious boyfriend in high school, and found myself very focused and not paying attention to men in college, and then embracing adult dating post-grad. This has included long-distance relationships, many one-date-too-many situations because my young people-pleasing self didn’t know what to say, flights to different cities, people still watching my Instagram stories, and a hilarious Rolodex of stories. There is endless dating advice online, and oh my Lord, it’s confusing. As with any venture, I find that just trying yields better data than any talking-head expert could give. Lately, my dating experiences have been pleasant. Men making dinner reservations, showing up early to secure tables, calling when they say they will, listening to me, leaving me notes, and following up. One showed me photos of his garden, and another had researched opinions on Taylor Swift’s discography. My friend’s boyfriends are making their birthday’s special and don’t hold back with affirmations. Now there is no personal love story to write home about (don’t get too excited). But — there are men trying their best out there. I have seen it lately. I hope this gives you hope.

HOME FINDS ON SALE: This lamp I love! These chairs make my backyard. These chairs are at my dining table. Very cute umbrella on sale for under $130.

WHAT I’VE BOUGHT IN NYC SO FAR: I immediately purchased this tee in white and navy after trying it on in store. The fit is perfect. I got a small. Expensive, but think of the cost per wear! I love these flats I found on sale at Loeffler Randall. Immediately walked 20K steps in them out of the box. I also randomly got my doubles pierced on Saturday morning. Proof that the NYC energy is getting to me. My dad said no tattoos. (lol) These shoes are on my wishlist. I hunted this Zara set down because, despite the jester energy, it was surprisingly awesome on. I love this bandana-inspired card holder. Wearing these wrap sandals with every night out outfit.

MOVIE I LOVED: Voicemails from Isabelle is so good. A bit heartbreaking, but in a therapeutic way. I can’t stop listening to this song from the soundtrack.

DRESSES ON REPEAT: My closet is limited here, but simple dresses styled with different accessories and a Rent The Runway subscription are all I need. I love this white linen one. Ordered in a small and under $60. This black dress is the perfect summer dress. So flattering and still girly with the eyelet details. I wore it with a belt last night and paired it with different necklaces throughout the week. Literally wearing it day to night. I’m packing this red gingham number for the 4th. This little woven bag is a great size, comes in different colors, and is under $30 right now.

WHERE MY BUSINESS IS AT: Migrate is a team of four full-time (including me) and a few very key part-time people. I have been following the unmarked path of building a marketing agency from scratch since I was 19. 7 years later, things are working. My team is excellent and handles things. My role has shifted from the weeds to the captain's seat. I have time to work on my personal brand, which is meaningfully contributing to payroll. I used to read about “delegation” and roll my eyes. Like, what the actual heck does that mean? How can it not be you doing everything? Now, every time someone other than me answers an email, it feels like an angel earns their wings. But this didn’t happen through one conversation or one day when I decided to do something differently. This has been a gradual experiment of sustained trying over time. All things are created out of a sustained period of consistent trying. There is no way around this. Migrate is currently my child, and you know what they say about raising babies — “One day, you'll put your child down and never pick them up again. You won't know it's the last time when it's happening.” However, I never want to pick up email again. So praise God for that.

SPEAKING OF TAYLOR SWIFT: Do you guys really think she’s getting married at Madison Square Garden this weekend?

What I keep coming back to is where our credibility comes from. Julia Cameron’s argument that credibility lies with you, God, and your work. Not the market, or your Instagram followers, or the algorithm. This gives me a lot of freedom. My only job is to show up and make something, and my only audience is myself and God.

What has helped: create what wants to be created. That’s it!! There is no magic strategy or “10 tips” you might be missing. Every bit of fruit I’ve ever experienced in my work has come from just making something.

“As an artist, my self-respect comes from doing the work. One performance at a time, one gig at a time, one painting at a time.”

“As an artist, I do not need to be rich, but I do need to be richly supported.”

Being “richly supported” does not require a ton of money — it comes from the little choices of self-care and delight that are very accessible in our day-to-day lives. Taking a walk, putting our phones away, or buying some raspberries.

I also completely resonate with Julia when she says that if creatives don’t create, they get crabby. I personally become a nightmare person if I’m not making stuff. I never really understood why before reading this book. I couldn’t put language to the stuck feeling, but she says that cutting off creativity makes us savage — that we react as if we’re being choked. Creativity is oxygen for our souls.

She also says that the more she spoils her artist child, the more adult she appears. And it’s this backward thinking that really works. Treat the little kid artist inside of you well, and you can show up for everything else. Ignore the little kid, and you get the grinding depression she describes. Our inner child matters so much!! I never saw that before this book.

“Just when we get there, there disappears”

If the reward is the process, everything is a win, and we’ve already arrived. Our culture rewards the destination in theory and ignores the journey entirely, but the point of creativity is in the making.

ANYTHING GOES: As soon as I landed in New York, my tour guide ushered me up to my new apartment, and after setting down my things, we walked around the village, stopping into local coffee shops and restaurants, shaking hands with owners and behind-the-counter workers. Mid intersection, she leaned in and said, “In New York City, anything goes.” I grew up in the suburban Midwest — specifically, Ohio. I now live in the south. In these two regions, everything does not go. I was raised very aware that people care. But over the past few days, I have been repeating this to myself — “no one cares, anything goes.” It’s given me courage as I sit alone at empty bars, work among tech bros, and film myself on the street. It has given me the latitude to try! To be myself — to try on different realities, to ask for help, to introduce myself. No one cares!!!!! So you might as well be yourself and take up more space today.

SHOE SALE: This seems like the chic city walker shoe of choice. Plus, the annual sale is happening now. I love this classic flat, or this square-toed version. Comfortable platform heels, or heeled sandal (love the denim!). Strappy gold sandals or some good for walking many blocks.

IT’S ART, BUT IT’S ALSO AUDACITY: I have worked very hard (with a long way to go) to live with as much audacity as I can muster. I am not a naturally audacious person. I never raised my hand in school. As a kid, I was so shy. I don’t like being seen. BUT along the way, I’ve realized that usually everything I want is on the other side of closing my eyes and just doing it. It’s part creativity, other parts embracing serious cringe. Another thing I repeat to myself is, “It’s art, but it’s also audacity.” It has helped me. At the end of the day, action always matters more. It’s a currency that adds up over time.

AN IMAGE OF PARTNERSHIP: I recently found this video of Jon Batiste and his wife, Suleika, giving a tour of their Brooklyn home. It has been sticking with me — I love the image of their back-and-forth love, shared creativity, and support. I love how he describes the pink paint in their kitchen as “human.” I have rewatched many times — something truly magical about them.

HILL HOUSE SALE: Also a notable annual sale happening here! Love this nap dress with extra smocking, or this green-and-white number. Bright plaid mini in my cart. This would be cute styled for the fourth!

GIVING IN: I recently shared this poem I scribbled down while dining at a pizza place. It’s the summer of sway — and also giving into life.

to one more slice / a too-late goodnight / doubling texting / laying in the sunshine / a midday glass of wine / a joyful purchase / eavesdropping / canceled plans / playing hooky / dancing / for what were my defenses up against? / living!?

STORES I’VE LIKED: I’ve been here for like four days and have yet to take a serious shopping trip. But so far, a few stores I liked in my neighborhood — Big Night, John Derian (true art!!!), Airmail. More to come! Open to any recs.

BAG BLISS: So excited about this birthday gift. Comes in many colors and has a crossbody strap!

NYC WARDOBE: Loving this little black summer dress that can be styled in endless ways. I can’t go anywhere without this sweater. A low-profile, colorful tennis shoe with a crew sock adds some contrast to a look and makes walking painless. People treat their corded headphones like a cool girl accessory.

SUMMER STYLE ON SALE: A few more affordable finds for summer closets! Smocked boat neck dress, perfect white shift to dress up or down, linen blend pull-on shorts, pajama set that could be worn outside the house, white eyelet maxi skirt, ideal striped sweater layer, easy crew neck dress, tortoise flip flops, or these striped pants.

INSPIRATION SOURCES: Where do you find inspiration? Especially when writing, drinking in another’s good work helps my own form. I usually need to get the juices flowing before hitting the page. I love scrolling through Pinterest and my camera roll, reading Jen’s blog, referencing a bit of The Artist’s Way, or this big book of Mary Oliver. Even if I go outside and try to notice things, it helps me. A great documentary about an inspirational person will really help. I often watch this ad by Darling magazine that I discovered in college. I’ve had it bookmarked for years. I love the last line — “it’s only a crazy dream until you do it.” Where do you go to get your gears turning?

COLORFUL HOME FINDS: This rug has been a favorite, striped lamp under $50, love this red mirror for a pop on a wall, green grid lamp, or this polka dot pillow.

GARDEN GIRL SUMMER: I came home from the airport last week and audibly screamed — oh my gosh, my sunflowers!!! They stood taller than the house. A simple seed, creating endless magic. In my garden this year, I chose to stick to flowers. I planted zinnias (a few varieties), dahlias, cosmos, and giant sunflowers. I am delighted with the results! Gardening sounds like a very complicated undertaking, but just throw your seeds in the ground and see what happens. Everything is an experiment. Nature knows what it’s doing. You can find packs of seeds at Lowe’s that work just fine! And then you can walk outside and make bouquets and think to yourself, “wow, I can’t believe God thought of this.”

ON REPEAT: I can’t get enough of Jon Bellion’s live album. Watching him perform with this much passion and presence for his craft is SO inspiring.

GOOD HAIR: My dad gets a lot of attention for his hair. I’ll give it to him — it is good. His secret? He says this Nutrafol or this Nutrafol 50+ formula every single day. A great Father’s Day gift. I can’t believe it’s already Father’s Day this Sunday … !!!

IN THE MAIL: Speaking of hair, I ordered this hair brush on the spot after my hairdresser used it on me last night. Good for dry or wet hair. My hair is always tangly, and this worked like magic.

MORE ICE CREAM, LESS BEANS: The summer of sway that I mentioned here continues. This is a big week as I prepare to leave for NYC this weekend. So much to do — pressing in on all sides! But on Monday night, I got in the car, bought myself an ice cream cone, went to the beach, and ran straight for the waves. I jumped right in, bobbing up and down with the tide, and was immediately drawn out of my cycle of anxious thoughts. Oh, the world is so much bigger than me. Here I am floating in the giant sea. We’re all in a chase for that nostalgic childhood summer feeling, but I think it’s just a search for daily wonder. More permission for delight. We can give ourselves this. I love this quote that encapsulates some of this energy —

HELPED BY THE BEST VERSION OF YOU: Throughout your day, who accompanies you? Lately, I’ve been trying to channel the best version of me. Who is she? What does she say? How does share care for me? Even conjuring this visual helps me. Another question that snaps me to clarity — If your life were a movie, what would the audience be yelling at you to do?
