I am missing home.
comparing New York and Charleston, a look inside ShopMy HQ, and a dress that everyone is asking me about (Noticing Vol. 73)
On Wednesdays, I share a list of things I’m seeing, liking, thinking about, etc. This is my weekly bulletin board!
FINDING OUT HOW MUCH I LIKE MY LIFE. I just hit one month in NYC, and as of this week, I am starting to hit a wall. Now this is not all the city’s fault – although it is a demanding place. I am beginning to understand what people mean when they say that it’s a lot of work to live here. It is. But … I also have been completely out of routine and meeting about 3 new people every day. I am very introverted by nature, and my body is starting to scream that I need to be alone and eat vegetables. We all have our limits.
I have never felt very connected to a place. I have always thought of myself as someone who could throw themselves into a city and enjoy the thrill of figuring it out. I don’t resonate with my hometown at all; I feel very little need to ever return to where I went to college. After school, I moved to Charleston without knowing anyone, and everything felt like kismet. I love it there. I kind of figured that this would be the case in any city – if I did it in one place, I could do it in others, right?
I sprang for this NYC summer because I didn’t want to grow up and say “I wish I would have moved to New York City.” It felt like God had handed me the opportunity to find something out for myself. I wondered if I would ever want to leave. But as of this week, the data has started to become clear. I belong in Charleston. This is the first time I’ve felt like I have a true home for myself. I can’t wait to go back! I am thinking about what a gift it is to have the privilege of leaving your regular life so you can realize just how much you like it.
Three more weeks in NYC and I’m strapped in to make the most of it. I also can’t wait to settle back into the life I am so proud that I made. Aubrey wrote more about what it means to like your regular life here.

EVERYTHING IS A SKILL. Lately, I’ve seen a lot of people I’ve admired up close. I was talking to a friend at coffee about how when you see someone with notoriety in person, you realize they are human, and you have so much more in common than you might have thought before. Usually, the difference between you and them is a lot of practice and therefore more skills. Everything requires practice. But this means that everything is learnable. I’ve been repeating this to myself. If you’re willing to try, you can improve. And if you’re willing to grow, anything is really possible.
SHOPMY HQ. Niche bucket list item checked off thanks to my friend Jackie – a tour of the ShopMy office. I am so impressed by this company. Huge fan!!! It was magical and inspiring. For those curious, here are some pics:
FRESH LOOK. New website alertttttt! Check it out here. It’s so full of color, and I love how it represents all the different sides of me and my life.
I loved writing out my story here and reflecting on how much has changed through the years when it comes to my creativity. And don’t miss the new landing page for all things internet art here. More on that below! So excited!
INTERNET ARTIST INVITE. We just completed The Artist’s Way with my paid subscribers. It was truly a one-of-a-kind, kindred-spirited experience. (Gals, I’m sending the recording from the last call and more details tomorrow!) We are going to continue meeting and helping each other along the creative journey. I also want to be more of a resource for questions on building personal brands, creating content, putting yourself out there, etc., so I am creating a support group for people making things online. All Internet Artists, join us! Our first call will be at the end of August.
PERFECT PODCAST DUO. Someone asked me who my favorite author was this weekend, and I immediately said, Ann Lamott. She just released this podcast episode with Amy Poehler. I’m about halfway through, and it’s perfect. The way they talk about Mary and writing and art!!! Listen here.
POLKA DOT DRESS. A dress that almost broke my DMs and is under $60! I am wearing a medium. It’s a thick cotton/spandex blend with shorts built in!
EASY STRIPES: Maddie Kennedy just told me about these striped pants, which I now immediately need. Also just got this striped button down in from Sezane. Goes with everything!
UNDEREYE GLOW. What is a sleep schedule? This summer – I’m not sure. I’ve been trying Dib’s new undereye products in my makeup routine. They are double-sided with a brightening balm and a concealer stick. They are like magic. Launching on 7/30! Loving!
Sending love!
